Workshops

Dr Rita Rone is one of LifeSpan Services' key consultants/trainers on leadership, management and human resources-related subjects.  Her 31 year career with the Department of Defense, her recent doctoral work and her continuing research on a variety of workplace-related topics make her a well informed expert on issues important to federal managers.

Dr. Rone's Most Popular Offering:

Civilian Personnel Management Seminar:  A three day course providing training in policies, practices and procedures for supervisors and managers in federal government.  Designed for newly assigned supervisors - but also a great "refresher course" for longtime managers - topics cover Labor & Employee Relations, Position Management/Classification, Workers' Compensation, Staffing & Affirmative Employment, Discrimination Complaints, Employee Recognition, Leader/Employee Development and more.  Dr. Rone will work with key leaders and/or agency HR professionals to assure coverage of issues key to the particular agency.  (Includes workbook for each attendee).

For the "rookie" supervisor:

Basics for New Supervisors:  A two day course for those new to suspervision, this seminar deals with such issues as leadership styles, time management, delegation, employee counseling, conflict management, career development and more.  It is an excellent forerunner to the Civilian Personnel Management Seminar described above.  (Includes workbook for each attendee).

Note:  The two courses listed above may be combined into a five day seminar.

Relating to Change and Transition:

Moving to a New Culture focuses on helping the non-supervisory workforce with various issues relating to organizational change,

effective communication with one's supervisor and co-workers, team member performance and becoming a valued asset to one's organization through career and attitudinal development. (Half day workshop)

Leading During Transition focuses primarily on the supervisory role. Supervisors are provided strategies for the four C's: communicating, counseling, collaborating and coaching. They are shown how to foster a healthy transition for themselves and employees, with an emphasis on assuring their employees know their roles, responsibilities and level of accountability in relation to overall goals and objectives. (Half day workshop)

These can be presented at one organizational location in one day.  Ideal for organizations undergoing major organizational change such as downsizing, re-location, re-organization, or a significant policy shift.

Equal Employment Opportunity:

Working Together Effectively covers such topics as appropriate and inappropriate behavior in the workplace, best practices in workplace communications, diversity, prevention of sexual harassment, typical disciplinary measures for offenses of inappropriate behavior and roles and responsibilities in the discrimination complaints process.  This seminar has been utilized for superivsory and non-superivsory personnel in environments where problems in this area have surfaced.  (One day workshop)

Currently under development:

Effective Mentoring is a two day course designed to help an agency launch a mentoring program.  Day one is designed for mentors and covers such subjects as challenges of mentoring, communications (listening, reflecting, providing feedback), coaching, developing a career plan and more.  Day two (morning) is directed toward those being mentored, with an afternoon session for both groups.  The attendees discuss such subjects as goal setting, being receptive to constructive criticism, career planning, self-evaluation and being a lifelong learner.  Prior to presentation, Dr. Rone will work with organizational officials to make this presentation agency-specific.

Being the Most Effective Employee You Can Be is a two day course designed to help a person who is relatively new to the federal workplace understand what is expected of him or her as a successful, focusted employee in a federal environment.  Emphasis is on building positive work habits, setting priorities, focusing on what's important, knowing what it takes to be successful in your career field, and following through in all aspects of work.

Courses are also developed to order, from the agency's basic description of need or with the seminars described above as a starting point.
